Chapter 17

Davies looked disappointed. “Are they sure of that?”

“Not absolutely sure,” Simms told him. “The woods are very extensive, as you know. But our agents feel there would be more security guards in the area if a research or production centre was based there. If you remember, it was the tight security in the Ruhpolding valley that gave us our first indication of the plant there. There is nothing like that in or around Buchansee.”

“What about the airfield? Has that been looked at yet?”

“Yes. It seems to be slightly larger than we thought but still contains only one squadron of Focke-Wulfs. It has one unusual feature: a hangar that remained closed during the three days our agents kept up their surveillance. But what relevance that can have to our enquiry I can’t imagine. According to our agents, it is quite a small hangar and therefore couldn’t possibly be what we are looking for.”

Davies, whose ears had pricked up at the news, turned to Moore who, recently back from leave, was sharing the High Elms library with himself and Simms. “Have you any views on that, Moore?”

“Not really, sir. I agree it’s unusual to keep a hangar closed for three days. But we do close ours now and then to keep our boys warm, although I wouldn’t have thought it was cold enough yet. But perhaps it is in Bavaria.”
